Tasting the history of the Amana Colonies

The Amana Heritage Society...

... collects, preserves, and interprets the cultural heritage of the Amana Colonies National Historic Landmark. Their museums offer a rich historical experience of the German communal settlement in the Iowa River Valley.

There are various museum sites. The main museum and the High Amana General Store are open daily now. By May the Homestead Church and the Communal Kitchen Homestead will also be open.

Here are some up-coming events that will help you experience the Amana Story when you visit the colonies.

Maifest

The Heritage Society makes wonderful traditional Amana potato pancakes at Maifest. They are available from 11am-3pm on Saturday, May 6 near the Festhalle Barn.

Communal Kitchen Meals offered in Middle Amana

You will be served delicious traditional Amana menus from communal days. Food is served family style in the last remaining communal kitchen and dining room. You can buy tickets on the Amana Heritage website 2-4 weeks ahead.
