Breakfast at Die Heimat

Start Your Day On The Right Foot

Your hosts June and Marc grew up in the Kalona/Wellman Mennonite community so they are accustomed to hearty German food in bountiful servings! Since they have spent years living in Africa and Central America they also enjoy international flavors. They are committed to care for the earth, sustainable living and purchasing food locally.

Your breakfast is served in the dining room, which was once an Amana Communal Kitchen, and will consist of coffee or tea, fruit juice, a fruit dish, and a main course such as a breakfast casserole, specialty pancakes, egg dishes, breakfast sausage, and something home baked ... whatever the cook is inspired to prepare!*

Breakfast is a wonderful way to start your day; you may meet travelers from all over the world. Visitors came from thirteen countries this past year! Your innkeepers will be pleased to give a history talk at breakfast and share anecdotes of life in the Colonies today. You will learn about the seven villages and how best to spend the time you have. They can also share information about day trips to Herbert Hoover's West Branch birthplace and library, the Kalona Amish community, as well as the highlights of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

*We try to accommodate basic food restrictions such as gluten free, dairy free, etc. if you let us know ahead of time.
