Breakfast at Die Heimat

Start Your Day On The Right Foot

Your hosts John grew up in the south where breakfast was meant to stick to your bones and learn from scratch cooking from his grandmothers! If you leave his table hungry it your own fault. He is dedicated to sourcing as much of the food locally. He learned his culinary techniques from living around the world with his mom a missionary and dad an international marketing engineer. Karin (Mueller) grew up traveling around Germany and Austria with her family learning the German cuisine.

Your breakfast is served in the dining room, which was once an Amana Communal Kitchen, and will consist of coffee or tea, fruit juice, a fruit dish, and a main course such as a breakfast casserole, specialty pancakes, egg dishes, breakfast sausage, and something home baked ... whatever the cook is inspired to prepare!*

Breakfast is a wonderful way to start your day; you may meet travelers from all over the world. Visitors came from thirteen countries this past year! Your innkeepers will be pleased to give a history talk at breakfast and share anecdotes of life in the Colonies today. You will learn about the seven villages and how best to spend the time you have. They can also share information about day trips to Herbert Hoover's West Branch birthplace and library, the Kalona Amish community, as well as the highlights of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

*We try to accommodate basic food restrictions such as gluten free, dairy free, etc. if you let us know ahead of time.
