Old Creamery Theatre

The Old Creamery Theatre Company

The Old Creamery Theatre is a gem hidden in the midst of the cornfields and grassy expanses of the Amana Colonies. The company is a not-for-profit professional theatre founded in 1971 in Garrison, Iowa. Ten theatre colleagues formed the company in a vacant building that had once served the community of Garrison as a co-op dairy – hence the name. In 1988, at the invitation of The Amana Society, The Old Creamery Theatre Company opened its first season in Amana.

Since its founding, the company has been dedicated to performing high-quality, live professional theatre for audiences of all ages and interests, and offers a wide variety of plays each season. The Old Creamery is proud to be the oldest professional theatre in the state of Iowa.

Each year the company performs at least six shows on the Main Stage, as well as a few smaller shows in their Studio Theatre. They also have four annual shows for young audiences. Interspersed with the longer running shows are several one night or one weekend specials such as A Tribute to Elton John or A Tribute to Reba McIntyre. In the winter, patrons enjoy a dinner theatre that runs for a month and is often a murder mystery or interactive show.

Their actors are professional and some live in the area and work full-time for the Old Creamery Theatre while others are hired for a month or a season for a particular role.

The company owns a home in West Amana where visiting artists and interns stay.

The Old Creamery Theatre is involved in children’s education in multiple ways. Camp Creamery is a week-long workshop for children who are interested in exploring the exciting world of theatre. The camp is designed for children ages seven and up and the opportunity to work and perform with professional actors with The Old Creamery while they rehearse and present a play in their home community. They rehearse throughout the week with a final performance at the end of the week.

The company does school tours in the spring, bringing their shows for kids to local schools. The school provides the performance space and the children enjoy high-energy story-telling with a purpose. There is no need for buses to transport the kids anywhere.

We have enjoyed many shows at the Old Creamery; some are comedies, some musicals, some traditional, others completely new, others serious and heartbreaking. All of them have been enjoyable and have been high quality professional productions by a cast of very talented artists. Seeing a show at the Old Creamery is a treat and a nice way to spend an afternoon or an evening during a visit to the Amana Colonies.
